Brace Yourself as Port Charges Set to Go Up, Prices Likely to Follow

If you thought life was already expensive, here’s more salt for the wound: Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is hiking charges for at least 25 different services at the ports in Mombasa, Lamu, and Inland Container Depots (ICDs).

And when shipping costs go up, you already know who ends up paying: us.

The new fees will hit shippers, traders, clearing agents, transporters, and even the guy running that M-Pesa shop inside the port.

That means higher costs on goods moving in and out of Kenya, which will likely trickle down to your shopping basket.

KPA says it needs the cash to upgrade infrastructure and buy new equipment. Traders and clearing agents? They’re not happy, calling it bad for business in an already tough economy.

Bottom line? From September, expect higher port fees, and brace yourself for when those extra costs start showing up in your next shopping trip.
